Solid post, especially with the breakdowns. I would also integrate the 4321 Rule into here:

- Do I see myself wearing this in 4 years?

- Can I make 3 outfits I would wear with it?

- Can I get 2 friends (at least) who definitely could see me wearing this?

- Can I sleep on it for 1 night, or even better, 1 week?

Love this system. You use it??!

Yes!! And it works really well.

I don't categorize, but I do have a list of questions that I review before purchasing any clothes. Same idea though.

1) Do you really *love* it, or do you just want it?

2) Do you already have an equivalent garment?

3) Do you really have occasion to wear it?

4) Will it really look good on *you*?

5) In what ways are you settling by buying this particular one?

6) Do you want it because you want it, or because it’s a “good deal”?

4 and 5 are so real. 4 has plagued me especially as a tall guy.

I love this. It’s something I do subconsciously ie without having drawn a diagram for it. For me buying the Drakes x Aaron Levine coverall jacket was one of those decisions whereabout 5 of those categories were ticked. There’s an extra bonus category I think about now my son is older and that’s legacy pieces. This is definitely one he’ll be getting his hands on at some point.

Incredible purchase. I missed out on a few Drakes / AL pieces and regret it deeply.

And what a great thing too, just hoping that by the time our kids fit into our clothes, they’ll think what we left them was cool enough to wear!

Thanks man. I love it. My son is already eyeing up my stone island jackets. I reckon if we keep anything long enough they’ll be into it at some point….

If my dad had Stone Island laying around I’d also want to snag some 😂

Saved the chart to the cloud on all my devices so I can tell myself that I will reference it next time I want to buy something, fully knowing I cannot hold myself accountable 😩😩

I only shop within the ‘urgent’ category and the highs and lows that come with negotiating with myself. I can’t even imagine what some of these other ways of purchasing would feel like to my nervous system 😂 said as I just pulled the trigger on a Japanese brand overcoat at the secondhand store that I paced around for 15 minutes deciding on lol

HAHAHAHAHA. Brother you need an intervention 😭

I can’t even disagree 😩 but I am absolutely FEASTING out here. I need to start middle-manning or something. I’ll dm you what I just picked up, pretty interesting.

> I firmly believe that if you’ve wanted something for long enough without changing your mind, and it’s within your financial means, you should absolutely buy it.

I stand by this! And sometimes this item I regret not buying sooner, because it becomes so second nature. Buying a nicer bike for instance, I will never financially recover from, but now ride my bike 20x more. Regretted not getting one sooner.

What bike did you buy??

The regret is so real hahahaha

Got a Factor Ostro Vam off FB market that I absolutely adore. Went from riding 2 days a week to 2 hours a day 🫣

Dangggggggg 😮‍💨 — worth it hahahaha. Post NY marathon this year I’m planning on hunting down a bike as well! Feels like a great companion workout

Shout out to one of the best substacks. Curious (especially as a content creator) what do you do with your excess or the stuff you don’t feel you need anymore?

Mariano Leonczik's avatar

Appreciate it!

Few different things: (1) some things I do just save for the future, especially if I think it’ll be something I’ll wear again over time (2) I try to sell whatever is sellable at a price that’ll actually get it out of my house and (3) donate donate donate. I gift things to friends and family, and if I can’t figure that out I’ll donate to a local charity or find a drop off zone.

This = incroyable. Printing off to have a convo in our family with our kiddos. The money I spent in my 20s on clothes could feed a small nation.

Mariano Leonczik's avatar

Appreciate you! Hopefully it helps with some purchasing hahaha

Really solid framework! For me I see the “I want it” category as actually one of the least risky (my gut in the moment tends to know what I’m going to love long term and hold on to) - I struggle with the urgent category and see that as the most risky for me..

Great post. I tried to be mindful when it comes to purchasing clothes but for 2 years i've had developed some rules especially with big ticket items. For example, Every time my mom visit my brother in Japan, i saved money months away so i can send money to my brother and bought it for me and then my mom brought to me. In the end, set priorities straight.
