WDM is probably one of the few people that can point to japan inventing "collaborations". fashion brands collaborating with non fashion brands were already a thing by the 1980's in Japan.
very cool interview, I look forward to reading David’s book. One of his latest nwl’s issue talking about our possible ‘tasteless era’ is interesting as well.
I wonder how ‘Status Anxiety’ might play a role here though (De Botton wrote an entire book about this). If someone succeeds to be more at ‘peace’ status-wise, how would it affect his/her ability to create/enhance/nurture/boost culture?
That's an interesting thought. I could also see the anti status approach being aspirational for some people too. i.e. you not needing to aspire for something of status is aspirational in itself to some. is that what you're getting at?
you’re right. ‘anti-‘ might defo be aspirational as well. but if we draw a spectrum from ‘anti-‘ to ‘pro-‘ - what about the many nuances in between - ‘peace’ might be right in the middle for instance; it’s detachment, not caring about status at all - don’t bother to promote ‘anti-‘ and don’t fall into the ‘pro-‘ race / treadmill. in that case, how would this impact my capacity to create / influence culture? I’m thinking ‘out loud’ (or in writing actually), I don’t have the answer 🙃
straight up legendary. if you're a subscriber to Blamo pod they did an awesome interview with him about all this stuff too. It's one of my favorite interviews
